From the traditional perspective on the history of journalism, the French journalism of the Old
Regime was under the control of strict censorship. The French journalism didn’t attack the Old Regime
until the 1789 Revolution. However, the latest researches have showed that in 1775, the French public
journalism had become radical in politics. This phenomenon is not only linked with the frustrated
playwrights who swarmed into the journalism, but also with a series of political events, such as the
accession of the new king, the failure of the Reform of Maupeou and the restoration of high court of
justice. The radical journalism was suppressed by the authority very soon, and then was incorporated into
the royal censorship again. By 1779, all had fellen into the silence. However, this transitory freedom of
the press had hit the precarious Old Regime very hard.
