Abstract

As a kind of universal cultural phenomenon, the mechanism of “informational avoidance” contained in “taboo” is diffcult to be explained directly by the classical communication model based on the information theory. This paper proposes that taboo culture contains the special communication mechanism of “the communication of ‘silence’”, and provides “pragmatics” interpretation from the diachronic and synchronic dimensions respectively: synchronically, by analyzing the textual forms of “language, writing, and behavior” of taboo culture with the improved Greimasian Square, we can see the common ideographic structure of “being & nonseeming”; diachronically, the study of the symbolic relationship between “name and nature” of “taboo ” shows that, although “ the communication of ‘silence’” originated from a specifc social and historical context, it is still enlightening to the analysis of the generation mechanism of symbol communication in the context of new media today; The theory of “ the communication of ‘silence’” behind “taboo culture” contains a general communication rule, which makes it have universal theoretical applicability to communication studies.
