Dialectic Model of Control: The Development and Shift of New Pattern of Information Transmission
Jan L. Bordewijk and Ben van Kaam came up with the New Patterns of Information Traffic from the perspective of “control” in the mid-1980s, and this new model got well known by the academia through the introduction or citation by scholars like McQuail and Windahl, Jensen, and Mcmillan. Thesenew patterns and their subsequent development, however, have not considered the changing roleof individuals in a transforming media environment. From the perspective of Giddens’s Dialectic of Control, the relationship between individuals and the media center is two-way. When individuals are able to control the media center, the latter will find new ways of controlling the former. Therefore, we develop a “Dialectic Model of Control” to capture such reciprocity and to illustrate the complex relationships between individuals and media centers.
