Abstract

This research based on the statistical analysis of 120 cases of social protest in the past decade, it tried to define the emotional and rational mobilization strategy. Then it has calculated the different types of emotional and rational choice and mobilization effect. It found out that the choice of emotions and rationality is influenced by multivariate factors such as the identity of the protesters, social resources, interest relevance, political opportunity and response mode. The data show that the use of rational mobilization strategies in social protest events is richer than emotional mobilization, but the frequency and intensity of the useage are unknown. As for affecting factors, the social protestors’ identity is highly positive relative to rational mobilization. when the identity of protestors is in-system, its mobilization strategy is on rise and the possibility of violent conflict is lower. The emotional mobilization is positively related to the level of reported media. The more emotional mobilization strategies people use, the more vulnerable attention from media, especially state-owned media. In addition, there are significant differences between the level of media and the results of the movement. That is to say, there are significant differences between results of events that only reported by local media and results of events reported by state-owned media.
