Schema Competition: Pearl River Delta’s College Students’ Interpretation of Hollywood Movies and the Identification with Native Culture
This article is a case study of the Pearl River Delta's college students' interpretation of the Pursuit of Happiness, an inspirational movie produced by Hollywood. This paper proposes a theoretical framework of schema competition, which sees these college students’ interpretation of Hollywood movies as a process by which the youths’ old schema encounters and competes with the western schema presented by the movies. The empirical data result in three patterns, including the schema balance, the enhancement of the old schema, and the adoption of the new schema. The Pearl River Delta's college students enhance the old schema such as the view toward money and the lifestyle; however, these college students tend to adopt the western schema in terms of the core values such as individualism, freedom, and equality. In short, exposure to global media weakened the Pearl River Delta's college students’ identity with local culture.
